whitemetal kit: NER 10T fitted cattle wagon, diagram K1
NER 10T fitted cattle wagon, diagram K1 in 4 mm scale
The North Eastern had a substantial fleet of medium wagons, the Diagram K1. The basic design dates back to the late 1890's and examples were still being built after grouping in 1923. Cattle traffic gradually reduced due to competition from road transport.
Some versions were through fitted, with both Westinghouse and vacuum braking systems to allow for passenger working at the head of a passenger train. Predominantly these vehicles would be allocated to a specific station and would be returned empty to that station. Some wagons were vacuum fitted only or vacuum piped.
