Whitemetal kit: Glasgow & South Western Railway, LMS & BR - Diagram 28: 10 ton Covered Goods Wagon in 4 mm scale
These 11'0" wheel base vans formed the backbone of the G&SWR's covered goods fleet, comprising some 30% of the fleet and nearly 7% of the total G&SWR's wagon rolling stock of over 1300 wagons. Between 1918 and 1922, 449 10t vans were in service on the network Many variations in the design and detailing were introduced over the years that these vans were made, inevitably these were changes to the brakegear, axleboxes and l fittings. The main changes being the adoption of oil axleboxes in favour of the original pattern grease axleboxes, and changes to the brake gear. Later pattern examples, and those after refit or rebuild would have the Morton Cam brake which was introduced around the time of grouping or on the absorption into the LMS.
Vans of this type were heavily used and frequently seen out of the G&SWR's area and have a design life and service expectation of at least 30 years. Many will have survived well into British Rail. These vehicles would be common throughout Scotland and Northern England, photographs show that these vehicles travelled as far as Leicester in 1921, and therefore by inference the wagon is believed to range down to London and any major port area where goods would be transhipped.
